The Beam: Episode 1 by Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant

BEAM_E1-SMALLER1This review contains no spoilers.

The Beam: Episode One kicks off a science fiction serial by Realm & Sands author Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant. Like all of the pair’s serials, the first episode is a short novella that establishes the setting’s premise and introduces the principal characters and themes that we can expect to see in the following arc. It ends on a cliffhanger that practically begs you to buy the followup collection of The Beam, and the idea is an enticing one. Read the rest of this entry »

Premade Covers for Authors

Here at Book Nouveau my mission is simple: help readers find and identify quality self-published books. I get the books I read sent to me directly by authors, but in the marketplace what brings a book to a potential reader’s attention is the cover. We’ve all heard the adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but that’s exactly how it works. Your cover has to look professional and grip a reader instantly.

I strongly encourage authors to commission a new cover from a designer, but this can take hundreds of dollars and weeks of worth. A new author doesn’t always have the capital to invest, and it takes time to learn the layout skills yourself if you don’t have the background in design.

Fortunately for authors there is an intermediate step. I’m offering pre-made covers for sale, currently at $30 each, though this price may increase if demand is high enough. Just pick out a cover, tell me what author name and byline you want, and if there is any other text. I’ll send you a watermarked copy to approve, you pay me, and I send you an ebook-sized .jpeg file you can use.

Quick note to authors

I have a relatively high volume of submissions, so I really don’t have the time to respond until and unless I’m actually posting a review of your book. You don’t need to ask if I want to see a copy of your book; just include the .mobi or .pdf as an attachment. I can’t say that I’ll get around to reading and reviewing it, but I certainly will try.

Black Monastery by William Stacey

black monasteryI obtained a copy of Black Monastery from the author. This review contains mild spoilers.

Black Monastery is a historical horror novel by former soldier William Stacey. Set at the end of the 6th century, it tells the story of a Viking raid gone horribly awry. Asgrim Wood-Nose, Viking war-chief and outlaw, sails against the Franks, raiding to raise the fortune he needs to amass in order to pay his blood-debt and return home. On the island of Noirmoutier, rather than the promised silver, he finds evidence of a horrible massacre… and an ancient lurking evil.
